URBAN DESIGN BEYOND THE LOCAL

# URBAN REGENERATION | PORT

Arcimed | Mediterranean archipelago

The research proposes a reflection on the old conflict between settlement and port area, taking the specific point of view of the island’s realities. The objective is to read the waterfront regeneration processes in relation to the strategies of local development policies and the global dynamics of maritime transport. The research contribution highlights the themes, the modalities and the requisites for the restoration of the relationship city / port in the islands through analysis of case studies, guidelines and taxonomies of the island realities.

Strategic asset | Port of Livorno

The research activity investigates the possible territorial scenarios that can arise through the creation of the “Darsena Europa” logistics platform in the port of Livorno. The research consists of two main areas: the cognitive framework, with the analysis of the instruments of territorial planning in relation to the port and the city-system as a whole and in its relations with the hinterland and with the connected networks; the design vision through which, using the scenario method, the port of Livorno will be re-positioned in the broader context of European infrastructural systems.

# ADAPTIVE PLAN STRATEGIES

Structural Planning | Roccastrada

The project aims to verify the potentialities of the adaptive approach with respect to the municipal structural planning and to the regulatory changes intervened in the transition between the lr. 1/2005 and the lr. 65/2014 (regional government regulations) of the Tuscany region. The field of study is the municipality of Roccastrada, where the definition of strategies, the identification of the perimeter of the urbanized territory and the interpretation of structural invariants are analyzed.

Operational Planning | Certaldo

The adaptive approach is tested in the municipal operational planning: the project aims to develop local strategies in the municipality of Certaldo in accordance with the new regional regulatory framework lr. 65/2014 and with the PIT (territorial plan) with the value of the landscape plan. The research path involves the definition of a vision for the future of the municipal territory, aimed at the interactive construction of the discipline for the management of existing settlements and the discipline for the transformations of the urban and infrastructural configurations.

The project, following the approach of Regional Design, aims to make the metropolitan city visible, to synthesise the development policies, to outline a shared image and to represent the strategy to which the metropolitan city must tend: Metropolitan Renaissance.

PSM (Strategic Metropolitan Plan) 2030 Monitoring

The 2030 Strategic Plan of the Metropolitan City of Florence is assessed for its operational capacity to implement strategic indications and projects. The project is focused on monitoring, evaluating and updating the plan by: acquiring the information needed to update the ongoing projects and, more generally, the entire PSM; detecting opportunities and critical issues; verifying the impact of public policies in place in a dynamic context; developing a comparative investigation.

# Cooperation versus conflicts | REPRESENTATION AND GOVERNANCE

Metro-conflicts

The project “Metro-conflicts. Representation and governance of territorial conflicts” has as its main objective the understanding of the forms and outcomes of territorial conflicts, referring to the new institutional framework represented by the Metropolitan Cities; the research tries to evaluate, at different geographical scales, emerging conflicts in order to promote a metropolitan culture and a governance system based on territorial inclusion and cohesion.

Metropolitan cooperative tools

The project “Tools for governce and cooperative planning in the metropolitan area” aims at understanding the forms and outcomes of territorial cooperation on a metropolitan scale. PLANNING ACROSS LOCAL BOUNDARIES

# Making the region visible | River contracts

Calore River contract

River Contracts, through the integration of public policies and private actions, stimulate the capacity for cooperation and sharing between different levels of government and between various public-private entities. In this area of action, the project has, as its main objectives, the design of a vast area vision, the definition of a manifesto on the principles of river contracts and the drafting of guidelines for the active conservation and enhancement of the territory falling within the fluvial basin of the Calore River.

Ombrone river contract

The project concerns the municipality of Buonconvento (SI) in the upper Ombrone and the hamlet of Sasso d’Ombrone in the municipality of Cinigiano (GR). These are two pilot areas on which to reflect on the relationship between the anthropic context and the natural and landscape environment of the river. This territorial project is a meeting space for local convergent actions, projected towards a shared image of the future and characterized by the use of the logic of inter-institutional cooperation and interscalar programming.

# Visioning for spatial planning | Inter-municipal planning

Union Valdera

The Unione Valdera is a local authority set up between the Municipalities of Bientina, Buti, Calcinaia, Capannoli, Casciana Terme Lari, Chianni, Lajatico, Palaia, Peccioli, Ponsacco, Pontedera and Terricciola for the shared management of a plurality of functions and services. By developing the inter-municipal structural plan, the project aims to summarize the strategies, present in the municipal planning tools, as a basis for discussion to undertake a collaborative path aimed at bringing out common vision through the techniques of the Regional Desing.

Unione Barberino V.E. and Tavarnelle V.P.

The project concerns the municipalities of Barberino Val d’Elsa and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa which are developing an administrative fusion for which a referendum consultation was scheduled in 2018. In the transition phase towards the Single Municipality, a shared reflection was activated to jointly delineate the structural and local plan that could lead to the elaboration of shared vision aimed at fueling the idea and the image of a unitary common territory.

AREA VASTA 2.0

Research objectives

The research unit aims at the dual purpose of 1) activating reflection paths concerning institutional transformations and emerging issues in territories marked by dimensions and dynamics of a large area, and 2) devising project proposals through which it is possible to support the operation administrations and actors who interact in these areas, at all levels.

For this purpose, the A.Vast Research Unit assumes the following scientific objectives:

– define a theoretical-methodological and instrumental framework of an interdisciplinary and trans-scalar nature for an advanced research on analytical and planning issues related to the territorial dimension of the vast area

– to stimulate research and experimental and innovative projects on the issues of the vast area, creating networks with universities and national and international research centers, also in order to participate in national and international calls

– interact with institutions and actors involved in the field of vast area planning, through scientific support to concrete processes of programming and planning

– define innovative tools for representation and communication of the vast area, which increase both the recognition and the understanding of spatial, functional and economic dynamics that often go beyond administrative boundaries, and the prefiguration of possible futures.
